Tunisia – Collective Resignation of University Hospital Doctors, Pharmacists, and Dentists

The General Union of University Hospital Doctors, Pharmacists, and Dentists in Tunisia announced a collective resignation of all its members. They will resign from their roles in treatment, teaching, research, and administration.

This demonstration is against the poor working conditions in university hospitals. The union states these conditions do not meet the European standards used by Tunisian courts in medical responsibility cases.

The resignation also indicates support for doctors who were recently sentenced to up to 10 years in prison in the case of the newborn deaths. The court blamed them partly because they didn’t resign, even though they had reported problems in the hospital’s sterile room.

Union leader Adnan Al-Hanachi said the decision to resign comes after the court suggested that doctors should quit their jobs to avoid being held responsible.

Starting tomorrow, the union will collect 2,000 signatures for the resignation and submit them to the Ministry of Health.
