Tunisia-Dean of Tunisian Engineers: “Tunisia annually gifts about 650 billion to economies of foreign countries” [Video]

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, Dean of Tunisian Engineers Kamal Sahnoun has underscored a notable trend of brain drain, with about 6,500 engineers leaving the country annually after finishing their education at Tunisian universities. This exodus represents a significant investment loss for Tunisia, as the state spends approximately 100 thousand dinars on the education of each engineer, totalling a gift of 650 billion millimes (or 650 million dinars) to the economies of foreign countries each year.

Sahnoun pointed out that Tunisian engineers are sought after worldwide, including in Europe, America, Africa, Australia, and the Arab Gulf countries. This need is attributed to their high-quality education in Tunisian universities and their capability to easily integrate into various global economies.

Similarly, Sahnoun remarked that between 8,000 and 8,500 engineers graduate from Tunisian universities every year. The departure of the majority of these graduates represents not only a financial and economic loss for Tunisia but also a missed chance for local innovation, wealth creation, and job generation.
