Tunisia-Decree on transport of women farm workers to be adopted by Cabinet meeting Wednesday

A government decree on the organisation of transport for women farm workers will be adopted at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Oussema Kheriji said Tuesday.

Speaking at a seminar on women farmers held on Tuesday, he said decree concerns Law No. 51 of 2019 creating a category of “transport of farm workers”.

The law stipulates that the transport of farm workers is a non-regular public transport service of persons reserved for permanent, seasonal or temporary agricultural workers.

The fare for this service is set per person and calculated on the basis of the distance travelled, in accordance with the provisions of that Act.

In this context, the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) has recorded 40 deaths and 530 women injured over the past five years.

Civil society associations and organisations called on June 11, 2020 for the implementation of Act No. 51 of 2019, one year after its entry into force.

Act No. 51 of 2019 was drafted following a tragic traffic accident in Cebbala delegation, Sidi Bouzid governorate that left 13 women farmhands dead and 20 injured.
