Tunisia – Discussions between Ghannouchi and Mechichi are heading towards a dead-end!

The two-day discussions between Ghannouchi, Karoui and Mechichi, in preparation for a cabinet reshuffle leading to the establishment of a political government, appear to be aborted in the short term. Before any talk, and before tackling the essence of the subject, and even before talking about compromises. The Sheikh, dedicated to his bad habits, started by forcing his provisions and demands.

Which seems to have considerably displeased the prime minister. The Sheikh commanded Mechichi to dismiss his chief of staff. It needs to be stated that the latter, as a true product of the administration, maintained on doing his job as he learned to do, listening only to his beliefs and his conscience. In particular, in connection to appointments to fundamental positions in the administration.

He got it into his head to appeal to the people he thinks are the best for the job, and who have the best resumes. Although this process didn’t satisfy the Nahdhaouis who insist on placing the maximum of their supporters in these offices, the best part is that they don’t even cover it anymore. And that’s where it began to get stuck between Ghannouchi and Mechichi.

Indeed, the latter, also a pure product of the Tunisian administration, has a distinct vision of the administration and the post and he remains persuaded that no one other than himself has the right to intervene in the choice of the members and the chief of his cabinet. So, according to the latest news, it looks like Mechichi is going to veto the Sheikh’s offer. This does not bode well for the rest of the “attempt at discussions”!
