Tunisia-Education Ministry will not hesitate to close any school with high infection rate, says Sellaouti

The Education Ministry will not hesitate to close any school which reports a high COVID-19 infection rate, Education Minister Fethi Sellaouti said on Monday.

One school and many classes have been closed in numerous educational institutions after logging several infection cases, he pointed out to the media on the fringes of a regional seminar held in Ariana to assess the sector.

Sellaouti did not rule out the possibility of resorting again to the system of teaching by groups or remote teaching in the event of a rise in the number of COVID-19 infections in the event of a new wave of the pandemic, pointing out that this decision remains inherent to the Health Ministry’s recommendations with a view to protecting the health of students and educational staff.

The minister further indicated that the general assessment of the education system has revealed major shortfalls in the students’ skills due to the suspension of classes during the general lockdown period.

In this regard, he indicated that the Ministry will conclude contracts by objectives with the local education authorities to achieve some expected objectives to improve the sector’s performance.

The Minister also said that the educational reform should focus on lightening the curriculum and school time.

He also added that the ministry will ensure control missions to counter corruption in all local education authorities.
