Ennahdha’s executive bureau said it “understood” the petition signed by 100 of its leaders in which they called on president of the movement Rached Ghannouchi “to explicitly announce that he will not run for president of the party at the 11th congress and to commit not to amend Article 31 of the party’s rules of procedure.”
“The executive bureau understands this initiative,” said a statement by the party, noting that only the congress preparation committees are authorised to react to all initiatives and proposals. The bureau is committed to holding the congress on time.
The statement said the meetings between PM Hichem Mechichi and representatives of parties, parliamentary blocs and social organisations will make it possible to face the urgent issues raised in the country.
It welcomed the agreement reached between the government and the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) on the third instalment of salary increases for state employees and the increase in the guaranteed minimum wage for private sector employees.
However, the bureau is “concerned” by the second wave of the coronavirus, calling on the different stakeholders to boost efforts to defeat the pandemic.
Ennahdha “reiterates its condemnation of all stages of normalisation with Israel aimed at stifling the Palestinian cause for the benefit of totalitarian interests,” the statement said.
