Tunisia – Epidemiological situation of rabies is frightening and Ministry of Health recommends intensification of culling stray dogs

Dr Kawther Hrabesh, the coordinator of the National Rabies Control Program, cautioned of a rise in rabies cases over the past three years, with Tunisia registering six deaths from rabies, while four deaths from this disease have been recorded this year, only.

A 14-year-old child is currently hospitalized in the ICU after contracting rabies.

Dr Kawther Hrabesh described the epidemiological situation in Tunisia as frightening, due to the spread of stray dogs everywhere, without any steps being taken to deal with this situation.

She confirmed that rabies infections have risen in recent years, coinciding with the fall in the hunting of stray dogs, adding that cases of rabies have been recorded in areas free of the disease.

She criticized campaigns against the hunting of stray dogs, which have led to an increase in infections with this deadly disease, particularly since dog sterilization operations are extremely expensive and require large resources,
