Tunisia evacuates three of its nationals from Haiti in grip of violence

Tunisian authorities were able to evacuate three Tunisian citizens living in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, who had voiced their desire to leave due to the decline of the security situation and are currently working to obtain the evacuation of a fourth Tunisian.

A press release published today, Saturday, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Tunisians Abroad reveals that the Tunisian Embassy in Washington took charge of the logistical procedures for this evacuation, which took place late in the evening of Monday, March 25, 2024.

The three Tunisian citizens reached safely on the French island of Martinique yesterday Friday and will leave in the evening towards the French capital, Paris.

On March 22, the Tunisian embassy in the United States of America took the initiative of reaching the French embassy, to study the possibility of evacuating them in collaboration with the French authorities if they decided to organize flight evacuation for the benefit of their community residing in Haiti.

Immediately after France announced its intention to evacuate its community in Haiti, the Tunisian embassy in Washington coordinated with the Tunisian embassy in France, which submitted a request to the crisis cell in charge of this file within the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and was able to obtain the agreement of the French authorities concerning the evacuation of the three Tunisian citizens.

Coordination continued between the two embassies until those impacted boarded the evacuation flight.

The Tunisian embassy in Washington accompanied the evacuation process at every moment, since the departure of the people involved from their residence on Sunday March 24, 2024 to join the French embassy in order to request an entry visa into the territory. On March 25, at the French Institute received entry visas into France, they boarded the helicopter and arrived at dawn on March 26 to board the ship that would take them to the island of “Martinique”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated, in the same communication, that the Tunisian embassies in Washington, Ottawa, Rome and Paris are working intensively to guarantee the evacuation of a fourth Tunisian citizen who expressed his desire to leave Haiti, in coordination with authorities of friendly countries.
