Tunisia-Farouk Bouasker: “The electoral law poses several issues. We demand explanations”

A dialogue meeting was organized today, February 16, 2022, by the Center for the Mediterranean and International Studies under the title“Referendum and early elections: what preparation? ».

Present in the meeting, the Vice-President of the Independent High Authority for Elections, Farouk Bouasker underscored, in a statement on private radio today, Wednesday, February 16, 2022, that multiple issues will be raised during the organization of the referendum planned for 25 July next, given that the legal framework regulating it stipulates that the participants in it are the parliamentary parties.

Calling for a need to review this article in this chapter and the degree to which it can be applied with a frozen parliament, in addition to the question of public finances. “We don’t know if these points will be maintained or changed,” Bouasker said. Bouasker emphasised that any revision of the legal framework for elections or referendum must be early, particularly since international recommendations stipulate that the substantive elements of electoral laws must not be modified during the election year.

Highlighting the need to clarify the legal framework in this regard, as soon as possible so that the committee can prepare and not sow confusion during its work. Bouasker again revealed that the constitutional framework of the referendum and the elections, from the legal point of view, is still in force and we can apply it and that Decree No. 117 does not bring anything new with respect to constitutional organs.
