Foreign Affairs Minister Noureddine Erray Participated on Thursday in a debate launched by Germany at the United Nations Security Council on “Pandemics and Security,” chaired by German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, with the participation of UN Secretary-General and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Speaking the UN Security Council, Erray pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic is an unparalleled global threat for all humanity, adding that its consequences require collective action, a Foreign Ministry press release reads.

In this vein, he repeated Tunisia’s position since the commencement of the crisis, marked by a call for solidarity and synergy of efforts at the international, regional and national levels, to cope with this major humanitarian challenge, evoking the unanimous adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution on the COVID-19 pandemic as submitted by Tunisia and France.

“Tunisia considers that the COVID-19 crisis has forced the humanity to rethink the nature and foundations of the current global order, and has revealed a new kind of epidemiological threat that no country, regardless of its development level, could evade its impact,” he estimated.

He indicated in this regard, that the world is currently facing new forms of threats to international peace and security, which should push to change the adopted approach and tools to be implemented to address them, calling on the Security Council to thoroughly examine these issues so that it can fulfil its primary responsibility for the maintenance of peace and security in the world.

Tunisia affirmed on the occasion, its support to the efforts exerted by the UN Secretary-General and all the initiatives and measures he had proposed to ease the impacts of this pandemic, especially in conflict zones such as his call for an immediate global ceasefire to ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need.
