Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Othman Jerandi welcomed lawyer Haykel Ben Mahfoudh, professor of public international law and Tunisia’s nominee to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Mr Jerandi emphasised the significance attached to this nomination by Tunisia which beliefs in the performance of this international judicial body in the promotion of international peace and security.
The FM likewise stressed the concern to assist Tunisian expertise to communicate an honourable image of the country abroad, echoing the importance of its role on the international scene and its positive adherence to the multilateral working system.
For his part, Ben Mahfoudh commended the efforts of Tunisian diplomacy to secure the success of the election campaign dedicated to this candidacy. The 19th session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute will be marked by the election of six judges who will take office in March 2021 at the International Criminal Court. A court tasked with judging persons indicted of genocide, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression and war crimes. Tunisia joined the ICC in 2011, consequently becoming the first country in North Africa and the fourth in the Arab world to join this international criminal jurisdiction created in 2002.
