Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisian Expatriates, Othman Jerandi, spoke on Friday on the phone with US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen E. Biegun
The talk focused on ways to strengthen Tunisian-US relations in all areas, both on the bilateral and multilateral level, as well as regional and international issues of common interest, the Foreign Department said. The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State reaffirmed his country’s support for Tunisia’s experience of democratic transition and its commitment to continue to develop partnership with Tunisia in the political, economic and security fields. For his part, the Foreign Minister praised the continued support of the United States to Tunisia to help it meet the economic, social and security challenges that it faces. Jerandi also reiterated Tunisia’s consistent position towards the Libyan issue, based on its commitment to a peaceful Libyan-Libyan solution to the crisis. In this regard, he noted the efforts made by Tunisia to help the Libyans reach a political settlement of the crisis as soon as possible, so as to reduce tensions and limit their spread in the region, given their possible negative impact on neighbouring countries in particular, and on the Mediterranean space in general. The telephone conversation also provided an opportunity to stress the importance of cooperation between the two countries within the United Nations, particularly in the Security Council, especially on regional and international issues of common interest. The draft resolution that would renew the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until September 15, 2021, which will be voted on September 15 this year, was discussed on this occasion. The two parties agreed to continue consultations and coordination and to increase the exchange of visits between senior officials of the two countries. |
