The Migration Department of the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights “FTDES” has called for the definitive closure of Borj Chakir landfill and head toward creating a project aiming at recycling waste as well as restructuring approaches to handles waste in Tunisia. The organisation called to establish a national strategy with the partnership of civil society.
The FTDES viewed in its statement that Borj Chakir landfill is an environmental catastrophe that prompted multiple diseases of the neighbouring community, particularly cancerous diseases and shortness of breath, as well as pollution caused by the water layer as a result of waste reclamation without treatment and emission of toxic gases.
