Tunisia-Haykel Mekki: Parliament will vote in favour of Hichem Mechichi government

Speaking to Shems FM, Echaab MP Heykal Mekki said that his party will determine its position vis-à-vis the new government this evening following its national council meeting.

The MP proposed “a political ceasefire,” in which Prime Minister-designate Hichem Mechichi pledges to clearly articulate the strategies he plans to adopt to “stop the bleeding.”

Mekki stressed the importance of establishing this political appeasement, especially in the face of the possibility of early elections.

The MP based himself on the proposal made a few days earlier by the Movement that the Mechichi government should commit not to exceed 18 months in power. A period that would be sufficient according to the party to set up the constitutional court and modify the electoral law.

Meeki, moreover, estimated that the government would gain the confidence of the parliament during the plenary session scheduled for September 1, basing his remarks on the “flirtation” existing between the Ennahdha Movement and its allies on one side and the government of Mechichi on the other.

He, however, cautioned against establishing a government that was not based on genuine consensus, saying that such a government will only deepen the crisis in the country.
