Democratic bloc MP Haykel Mekki stated the current electoral system does not permit the Tunisian people to express their will.
He pointed out, by way of example, that it was extremely difficult to organize a referendum within the framework of the current texts when such a mechanism enables citizens to speak directly on some fundamental questions.
Elections can be tampered with by dirty money, polling companies and corrupt media. The referendum is the single way that people can express themselves without going through intermediaries, he said.
Mekki added that the economic and social crisis can only be surmounted with deep political reforms.
