Tunisia-Illegal migration the subject of a meeting between President Saïed Johansson and Lamorgese

The President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed welcomed on Thursday the European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, and the Italian Minister of the Interior Luciana Lamorgese at the Carthage Presidential Palace
During the meeting, the Head of State highlighted the necessity to adopt a comprehensive approach to migration, as security resolutions have shown their limits. This new approach will have to discuss the underlying reasons for this phenomenon through the battle against poverty and unemployment as well as by supporting development policies in the nations of origin.

For her part, the Italian minister reemphasised her country’s commitment to proceed to support Tunisia by boosting investments and participating in development in interior regions, while generating jobs for young people to curb the migration phenomenon.

For her part, the European Commissioner restated the commitment of the European Union to support the democratic transition in Tunisia, being one of the primary partners. In this context, she recalled the integration of the Tunisian diaspora into European societies and their effective role in the economic fabric in the countries.

The two parties communicated their willingness to fight the criminal networks of trafficking in persons who take advantage of the hard economic situation of some vulnerable groups to achieve their narrow profit objectives.
