Tunisia – INS: Average salary is 924 dinars

An overview of salaries in Tunisia

The average wage in Tunisia stagnates at 924 dinars, barely double the industrial minimum wage fixed at 460 dinars, according to a recent survey by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). This survey carried out in 2022 among a random sample of public and private companies representing 16 economic sectors, underscores the persistent salary differences between executives and workers.

Sectoral details of remuneration

INS data indicate an evident difference in remuneration according to sectors and professional categories. Executives profit from an average salary of 1,698 dinars, while employees receive an average of 658 dinars. In the public sector, executives receive on average 1,628 dinars compared to 612 dinars for workers.

The best-paid sectors

The financial and insurance sector offers the highest salaries with an average of 2,605 dinars, which can grow to 3,253 dinars for executives and go down to 1,112 dinars for workers. The ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) sector follows with an average salary of 1,908 dinars.

The worst off the education sector

At the other extreme, the education sector registers the lowest remuneration with an average salary not surpassing 792 dinars, stressing the remuneration challenges in this vital area.

Repercussions and prospects

This study underscores not only the challenges of pay inequality between different skill levels and sectors but also the urgent necessity for reforms for better pay equity in Tunisia.

The government, in partnership with private sector actors, is called upon to take measures to adjust this disparity which affects the lives of many Tunisians.
