Tunisia is aging – Seniors will soon represent fifth of population

The project “Executive Plan of the Multisectoral National Strategy for Older People 2022/2030” was the emphasis of a working session held today, Monday, at the Ministry of Family, Women, Children, and the Elderly. Representatives from the Ministries of Finance and Health, university professors, the Tunisian Association for the Preservation of Traditional Sports and Games, and the Tunisian Federation for Social Solidarity were present.

 
 
 
 

During the supervision of this session, the Minister of Families, Women, Children and the Elderly, Amal Belhaj Moussa, emphasised the significance of the implementation of the multisectoral national strategic plan in favour of people elderly due to various considerations, the most important of which is the growth of the age composition of Tunisian society, which has moved from a young society to a society starting to age, remarking that the proportion of elderly people in Tunisia will reach about a fifth of the population in 2036.

She revealed, according to a press release from the ministry, that the discussion on the multi-sectoral national strategic plan for older persons will be expanded on June 15 on the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, indicating that this plan, which will be implemented in collaboration with the various ministries and structures concerned, will guarantee the protection of elderly people, their participation and the enjoyment of their various activities.

It should be remarked that the multisectoral national strategy for older persons 2022/2030, which was prepared in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund in Tunisia, includes several axes, mostly represented in “the protection of older persons in the poverty and fragility and during crises, improve their quality of life and guarantee their right to a friendly and inclusive environment. The right of elderly people of all categories to access quality health services and the participation of elderly people in economic, cultural, sporting, public life and local affairs, in addition to the governance of the elderly sector and development policies approved in their favour.
