Tunisia – ISIE advances probable dates of next presidential elections

ISIE member Najla Al-Abrougui reported today, Thursday, June 27, 2024, that the date of the first round of the next presidential elections will be either October 6, 13, or 20, 2024, remarking that the maximum deadline given to the President of the Republic to issue a decree calling for a vote is July 20.

She added in a statement to TAP that the Commission yesterday started talks on a draft amendment to Decision No. 20 of 2014 of the Independent High Authority for Elections, dated August 8, 2014, relating to the regulation of the rules, procedures, and methods of funding the electoral campaign, pending its subsequent approval.

She confirmed that the Council of the Authority unanimously approved the adoption of the criminal record sheet (bulletin number 3) as a basic condition for running in the presidential elections, to prove that the potential candidate enjoys their civil and political rights and to guarantee that they are not involved in any of the electoral violations stipulated in chapters 161 New and 163 New of the Electoral Law, which impose provisions that deprive people of liberty due to the prevention of voters from exercising their electoral right or the candidate receiving foreign financing.

She revealed that the Authority will endeavour to establish guarantees that the candidate will not receive foreign, suspicious, or unknown financing.
