Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio requested the Joint Committee for Development Cooperation to delay talks on allocations of funds by the Committee to Tunisia, ANSA reported.
“I am asking you to suspend this allocation of 6.5 million euros pending a broader, integrated plan proposed by deputy foreign minister Del Re, and another side in a collaboration that we asked Tunisian authorities for in the area of migration,” Di Maio said. “We are all perfectly conscious of the importance of cooperation for development towards some countries, including for preventing uncontrolled migratory flows, but in this phase in which we are asking Tunisia – which I remind you is a safe port – for clarification regarding an increase of arrivals to Italy, it’s good to have a 360-degree approach. Also because these are interventions in favour of the local communities, which are essential for containing the slowdown inflows,” Di Maio declared.
