Tunisia-Judicial investigation into importation of waste in Tunisia

 

According to the spokesperson for the Sousse court of the first instance, a judicial investigation has been opened into the importation of waste from Italy to Tunisia. Speaking to Mosaique FM, he said that this investigation was opened following the collection of certain data.

The scandal was first revealed by a show on a private TV, were a company was importing large quantities of domestic waste into Tunisia from Italy for unknown purposes. The Tunisian company would receive 48 euros for each tonne of waste imported.

70 containers of waste from Italy, carrying 120 tons of waste, have just arrived in Tunisia. More than 200 other containers are still waiting in the port of Sousse.

These are various types of waste, including hospital waste, the import of which does not comply with national and international standards.

The Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, that it has ordered the opening of an investigation into a contract concluded by a Tunisian company for the import of waste from Italy, without disclosing the name of the company.

It added that it did not grant any authority to the company involved in this affair and that it “no ‘will not hesitate to take all appropriate legal measures in the face of this kind of overrun ”.
