Tunisia: Kais Saied calls for acceleration in processing of pending legal cases

Tunisian President Kais Saied met, on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, in Carthage, with Ms Leila Jaffel, Minister of Justice. During this meeting, the president insisted on the significance of quickly fixing several legal cases pending for years, including those linked to political assassinations and corruption.

Saied also recollected the rich history of judicial cooperation between Tunisia and Lebanon, remembering exchanges and conferences dating from the 1960s, which testify to the long tradition of exchange of expertise between the two brotherly nations.

The president also highlighted the necessity to revise articles 96 and 97 of the Penal Code to avoid their abusive use in harassing citizens or blocking state affairs. He criticized the political use of these laws to hinder public services and projects.

The meeting also examined the draft revision of article 411 of the Commercial Code, which will soon be discussed in the Council of Ministers before being presented to the Assembly of People’s Representatives.
