Tunisia-Kebili: Tear gas to disperse the protesters

Security units employed tear gas in several roads surrounding the headquarters of Kebili governorate to disperse the demonstrators among agents of the Environment, Plantation and Gardening Society.

The demonstrators assembled on Monday, November 22, 2021, in front of the governorate’s entrances in an escalation against a background of non-payment of their wages for two months.

The general secretary of the Basic Agents’ Union, Hedi Lahmar told the TAP that the demonstrations they carried out stopped regional officials from accessing the headquarters of the governorate, in particular with the programming of the session of the regional council.

It should be remarked that all the businesses near the headquarters of the governorate shut down after the security units used tear gas.

A number of residents of adjacent neighbourhoods, in particular Ouled Yaakoubi, opposed the method of security intervention and considered the use of the gas “extreme”. Asphyxiation cases have been reported among residents, report several sources.
