Tunisia-Launch of a national campaign for the maintenance of schools

The nationwide campaign for the maintenance of primary schools will kick off tomorrow, the event is part of a significant partnership operation with various stakeholders from the the private sector and civil society.
It is in this context that the advisor to the Minister of Education asserted that it is a full national program directed at enhancing the circumstances of these schools which are undergoing various failings in the level of infrastructure.

“Regarding support and maintenance work, this campaign will signal the commencement of routine work to watch the condition of these schools,” she told the national radio, dismissingthe fact that ‘it is simply a cyclical campaign.

She also added that these actions will essentially involve the cleanliness of the school environment, but additionally the issue of infrastructure and access to water.

In this regard, the official in the office of the Minister of Education, Lassaad Chouchane had sounded the alarm. He shared alarming figures concerning the access of educational establishments to drinking water.

As it turns out, in 2020, 461 schools are still suffering from drinking water supply problems and consequently have no access to water, putting students in deplorable conditions.

Last November, the education ministry’s request to support schools was received favourably by several parties, including civil society. The next test for the department remains the construction of new schools, in view of the constant increase in the number of students.

The Minister of Education, Fathi Slaouti, had confirmed that the value of donations granted by components of civil society to educational institutions reached around 15 million dinars.
