Well-informed sources have confirmed to Mosaïque FM that the call by the President of the Republic for an urgent meeting of the National Commission for the restitution of stolen funds has a direct connection with the approaching expiry of the deadline for the appeal against a first instance verdict issued by a Parisian court.
The decision ordered the lifting of the freeze on the accounts of Ben Ali’s daughters, Nesrine and Halima. According to exclusive information, the verdict was issued at the start of 2022 and the deadlines for the appeal expire in the middle of next August. This obliges the Tunisian authorities to speed up the filing of an appeal and prepare a file incorporating data that justifies this appeal.
Remark that the daughters of the former president have appealed to the French courts to lift the freeze on their bank accounts in France and to resume the managing of two housing estates. The file was reviewed by the French courts and a verdict was issued at the beginning of the year giving reason to the complainants. The appeal of the Tunisian authorities must be based on a permissible legal basis in France and before the courts of the countries of the European Union.
Among the conditions, Tunisia must submit final convictions against the persons concerned by the freeze and which confirm their involvement in money laundering or in drug trafficking or other crimes.
