Tunisia: Medical tourism attracts five million people annually

Tunisia has a significant tourist and medical asset, its thalassotherapy resorts. This sector, that of medical tourism, draws more than five million people annually.

These are the latest statistics indicated this Friday, January 26, 2024, by the director of investments within the national office of Hydrotherapy and Hydrotherapy Mohamed Skhiri.

He recollects that these five million visitors are mostly North Africans and Tunisians, in addition to European tourists, who are spread across the varied Tunisian thalassotherapy resorts.

Tunisia is at the forefront in terms of medical tourism and especially hydrotherapy on a global level. In 2017, more than five hundred thousand foreign tourists chose the destination for medical reasons.

In 2019, there were more than two million foreign tourists, including North Africans who picked the Tunisian destination for the same reason and in particular for the thalassotherapy resorts.

This official clarified in a statement to the Assbah newspaper that this sector stands out for the presence of multiple financial and tax incentives and advantages because it represents a priority sector for the State indicating a tendency to increase the amounts reimbursed by the security funds social.

“Medical tourism in Tunisia is regarded as one of the promising sectors, with seven spa resorts with mineral waters, 60 thalassotherapy centres and more than 340 freshwater treatment centres,” he said.
