Tunisia-Minister of Women calls for gender equality in the next government

Minister of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs Naziha Laabidi, called to sustain the policy of gender equality the formation of the upcoming movement maintaining the civil society has sunk to perform an efficient part to magnify the presence of women in decision-making positions, reports the TAP Agency.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the meeting of the Peer Council for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men, she regretted the weak participation of women in political life notwithstanding the presence of a law prosecuting political violence against women (Law No. 2017-58),
She, in this regard, indicated that the representation of women in the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) has decreased from 36% in 2014 to 23% in 2019.
“The number of women topping electoral lists in the legislative elections has dropped by 6%,” she said.
She also pointed to the divergences between constituencies in terms of women’s participation in the 2019 legislative elections.
“Women obtained higher number of seats in the northern- east and mid-east constituencies (30%) and lesser seats (7%) in southern constituencies,” the minister noted.
A report on the participation of women in the 2019 elections was presented during this meeting of the council; the 6th since its inception in 2016, attended by representatives of various ministries and civil society.
The report stressed that advocating women’s access to decision-making positions relies, not only on achieving a leap in the quantitative representation of women, but also on integrating women’s issues into all development strategies and general policies.
The report states that women won 55 out of 217 seats in 32 constituencies, i.e. 23% of seats only.
In the constituencies abroad, women obtained 5 seats, i.e. half of the total number of seats dedicated to Tunisians abroad. These results respect the principle of gender equality, the report said
