Tunisia – Monastir: Bad weather leaves damage including one death

The regional director of civil protection in Monastir, Jalloul Jaballah, said today, Thursday, that civil protection teams registered a death yesterday, Wednesday, at Wadi Gharraf in Sidi Bennour, in the direction of Ksour Essaf. The circumstances are not yet disclosed.

He clarified that the Civil Protection received a call yesterday to save a person who had lost consciousness. Nevertheless, the rescue team discovered a person in a state of death, and his car was inside a wadi, with a water level between 40 and 50 cm. This indicates that it was not a case of drowning, as the water level did not surpass half of the victim’s lower body.

The governorate of Monastir recorded notable amounts of rain last Tuesday, especially in the Beni Hassan region, where around 130 mm was recorded. Despite the high risks and warnings from the authorities, several citizens still found themselves trapped by the rising waters. The Civil Protection services recorded numerous distress calls from road users.

Civil protection teams were assigned to assist cross the roads, particularly Oued Al-Khor in Aamirat Tawazara and Oued Al-Gharraf in Aamirat Al-Fhul and Al-Sherahal, all part of Moknine’s delegation. Additionally, there were several transport assistance interventions in Zeramdine, Jammel, and Békalta.

Civil protection teams carried out 38 rainwater pumping operations, most of which were in the city of Monastir. They likewise inspected 28 homes that did not require water pumping. Furthermore, rainwater leaks in the corridors of several hotels were recorded.
