Tunisia – Mraïhi wanted for money laundering and illegal outflow of funds abroad

The prosecution at the court of first instance of Tunis authorized agents of the economic and financial sub-directorate to open an inquiry against Mohamed Lotfi Mraîhi and the secretary general of the party he leads for money laundering, alleging they smuggled profits abroad and opened bank accounts abroad without permission from the Central Bank.

According to the Mosaique FM, this investigation takes place in the context of a previous inquiry, which implicated the individuals mentioned in requests for sponsorship for the elections in exchange for money. The secretary-general acknowledged during the hearing that she had intentionally helped Mraîhi smuggle his money to accounts he held in foreign countries.

The prosecution authorized the detention of the secretary-general for five days, which may be extended, while Lotfi Mraîhi was included in the search, and investigations are still ongoing.
