Tunisia- Nearly 74% of external debt service repaid

According to statistics issued by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), Tunisia has managed to repay almost 74% of the service of its cumulative external debt. 

Therefore, as of September 10, 2023, the value of repaid debts attained 6,653.1 million dinars (MD), compared to the 8,945 MD planned for this year in the 2023 finance law.

This situation has generally affected external sector indicators, with net foreign currency assets having seen progress reaching 26.4 billion dinars (the equivalent of 116 days of imports), as of September 15, 2023, compared to 23, 7 billion dinars (the equivalent of 111 days of imports), on the same date last year.

The coverage of these charges linked to the service of the external debt was, again according to the statistics of the issuing authority, by tourist receipts and transfers from Tunisians abroad, which reached 10.7 billion dinars. , equal to a coverage rate of 161%.

Tunisia’s net external financing registered a significant decline, going from 3,411.9 million dinars (MD), at the end of June 2022, to 932, 8 MD at the end of March 2023.

A reduction especially due to the fall in external credits in general, the State only having recourse to its own resources.

It should also be stated that a budget surplus of 58.8 million dinars was recorded at the end of June 2023, following the growth in tax revenue which increased by 8.3%, for an increase not exceeding 7% for state budget expenditure.
