Al Amalleader Nejib Chebbi confirmed on Monday, April 12, 2022, that he had had a remarkably good relationship with trade unionists for years. In a post on his official Facebook page, Chebbi asserted that “Some reporters have commented on the initiative launched since April 9, as an attempt to employ the union in political disputes….I want to explain that my relationship with The UGTT dates back to 1966 when the late leader Habib Achour invited me to his house upon his release from jail, to consult with me on ways to support the Union for Student Opposition Work. This relationship continued until the conclusive stage of its long and venerable struggle when I visited him while he was being held in Borj Roumi jail in my capacity as a lawyer in the 1980s. As for my relationship with the trade unionists, it is a fraternal relationship. The free trade unionists knew me as an attorney to defend them before the various courts of the country, and in the media, I made their voice heard through the newspaper “Al Maoukif”, which I formerly directed. Such a relationship knows neither investment nor opportunism because it is simply based on giving and love for this dear country. I take this chance to renew my appeal to my union brothers to stay true to their traditions and shorten the course of their nation and start the national dialogue (…) I will set another date on “the battlefields” so that Tunisia live forever free and dear…” wrote Chebbi.
