Tunisia-Nighttime tensions in Mahdia: Brawl at emblematic Café Gamra in middle of Ramadan

During the month of Ramadan, the Mahdois enjoy to get together with family to share moments of friendliness and relaxation. Among the popular places for these meetings, the old town of Mahdia, in particular the Gamra café, occupies a prominent place.

What is Gamra coffee?

Café Gamra is an iconic place located in Mahdia, Tunisia. It is well-known for its friendly atmosphere, rich history and cultural significance in the region.

Founded several decades ago, and known for its century-old trees, the Gamra café has become a critical meeting place for the inhabitants of Mahdia and passing visitors. It presents an authentic setting where guests can enjoy tea, coffee and local drinks while chatting and enjoying the lively ambience.

Gamra Café is often cited in the stories and memories of Mahdia residents, and it continues to perpetuate its tradition as an emblem of the city’s social and cultural life.

However, despite the crowds and the warm environment that reigns there, a recent altercation has shaken the tranquility of the place.

A fight breaks out between two groups at Gamra cafe

Indeed, while hundreds of young people assembled at the Gamra café, the absence of a visible police presence favoured the outbreak of a fight between two groups of young people. This sudden fight caused panic among the children present as well as the families who had come to enjoy the evening.

Beware of the risk of accidents in Mahdia

Similarly, when moving around Mahdia at night, it is striking to note the large number of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds circulating without helmets and headlights.

The roads are invaded by these vehicles, often violating, with young people taking reckless risks such as riding several people on the same motorcycle or performing dangerous acrobatics.

Call for a reaction from local authorities

This alarming situation increases concerns regarding the risk of road accidents. It is accordingly imperative that local authorities react quickly to strengthen road safety in Mahdia and prevent possible tragedies.

The preservation of Mahdia’s reputation as one of the most peaceful cities in Tunisia is at stake.
