The president of the National Bakers’ Union Chamber, Mohamed Bouanen, stated that the owners of the bakeries will stop their activity from December 7, until all the sums due to them are paid.
He told Express FM, this Monday, December 5, 2022, that this is a debt of almost 250 million dinars, accumulated for fourteen months, engendered by the compensation system compelling the State to take care of part of the sale price of bread.
Bouanen clarified that the sale price of bread was equal to 0.270 dinars and that the State was responsible for 0.7 dinars. Except that, the latter had requested bakers to take care of 0.7 dinar temporarily.
“We demand the entire amount due to us and not compensation for a month or two. Bakers no longer have the means to pay their electricity bills or even their staff, “he said, adding that the Chamber had revealed the activities for six or seven days.
Mohamed Bouanen called on the State to reimburse the bakers while recollecting that the selling price of the baguette had not been revised since 2008, while the costs of production and basic products had increased.
The national interprofessional group of bakeries, falling under the Confederation of Citizen Enterprises of Tunisia (CONECT), disclosed this Tuesday that its affiliates are not affected by the strike, scheduled for tomorrow Wednesday, December 7, 2022.
The group, affiliated with the Confederation of Citizen Companies of Tunisia (CONECT), said that it has no intent of starting a strike and that work will continue in all modern bakeries in the national territory.
