Tunisia-Noureddine Ben Ayed: “We demanded, and we are still demanding, establishment of National Council for Food Security” [Video]

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, President of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries Noureddine Ben Ayed called on the Ministry of Agriculture to activate and focus the National Council for Food Security, which is comprised of experts and specialists in agriculture, to develop strategies that ensure the achievement of food security for Tunisia.

At the outset of his statement, Ben Ayed emphasised the Agriculture Union’s substantial concern concerning climate change and water scarcity. He underscored the importance of developing a strategy in partnership with the Ministry of Supervision to address this unprecedented situation faced by Tunisia. Ben Ayed stressed the need to formulate a hypothesis to navigate through the ongoing water scarcity crisis, which has persisted for the past four years.

The speaker pointed out that all parties today are actively working on how to rationalize water consumption, make good use of water resources, and distribute water reserves.

The President of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries alerted of the gravity of the situation for farmers, as many sectors have been impacted by this situation, most notably the large agricultural sector, in which work must be done to accomplish self-sufficiency, and this matter is not possible to happen in a year. Rather, there must be continuous and joint work, according to him.
