Tunisia-Poor performance of Tunisian diplomacy during its presidency of the UN Security Council

Inaugurating Tunisia presidency of the United Nations Security Council, and on the occasion of the exhibition of its program for this term by the Tunisian ambassador to the UN, the country, and its diplomacy have missed yet another chance to stand out and not to give a bad image to Tunisia.

Certainly while Arabic is a formal language at the UN, the Tunisian ambassador has decided to speak English, apparently for the pleasure of beating Shakespeare’s language. The result, he ended up sedating and disturbing the audience, particularly since we do not know what urged him to speak to the journalists present in large numbers, through the screen of a videoconference. This presented an aspect of distress as a first contact with the media.

The ambassador, obviously uncomfortable with English, did not disappoint to damage the hearing of journalists. Worse yet, his head was on his paper, which he read with the greatest difficulty, in a monotonous speech and extreme boredom.

Even the staging adopted by the ambassador for his speech did not fail to attract people, with a decoration deserving of a primary class, and objects appearing in the background, which had nothing to do with it.

In addition, and we do not know why, the program offered no longer involved the conference which was programmed for January 14, 2021, to address the impact of democratic transitions on international peace and security. A conference which, notwithstanding the uncomfortable title from the commencement, could have been an excellent opportunity to sell “Tunisia’s exceptional democratic experience”.

In short, a media appearance to forget … Although the most unfortunate has yet to come since this press conference predicts a poor performance by Tunisian diplomacy when it could have made the most of this opportunity which will not be repeated not anytime soon!
