Tunisia – Popular Current calls for speeding up examination of assassination case of Mohamed Brahmi

The Popular Current Party declared: “The ruling rendered in the case of martyr Chokri Belaid, which names the perpetrators of the crime, is a significant first step in the process of unveiling the truth because it only includes the criminals directly implicated in the execution of the crime.

This morning, Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the Fifth Criminal Chamber, specializing in terrorism cases at the Court of First Instance of Tunis, rendered judgments varying from the death penalty to the dismissal of charges in the case of martyr Chokri Belaid. The Popular Current added, today, in a statement that the truth needs progress in revealing the parties and people who contributed to the assassination and who contributed to prolonging the trial and falsifying the files, which requires the judiciary to make decisions in the same manner.

It furthermore called for a rapid decision on the case of martyr Mohamed Brahmi, founder of the Popular Current, remarking that this case has undergone significant developments and has witnessed numerous attempts to obscure the facts related to it.

The party emphasised that the progress made in the case of the two martyrs was a direct consequence of the change in the balance of political power and the start of the liberation of the judicial system from the influence of the system that had dominated it for years, appreciating the great role of defence collectives, who struggled for a long time to obtain the truth and establish justice according to the text of the declaration.

It should be stated that the secretary general of the Popular Current, Mohamed Brahmi, was assassinated on July 25, 2013, a few months after the assassination of the secretary general of the Al-Watad party, Chokri Belaid.
