Tunisia-President Kais Saeid meets with UN Special Envoy for Libya

President of the republic Kais Saied welcomed Special Envoy for Libya and Head of United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ján Kubiš at Carthage presidential palace. Mr Kubiš affirmed that he was ready to maintain consultations and coordination with Tunisia to reach a definitive political solution to the Libyan crisis, one that would shield the country’s unity and its stability.

The UN official embraced the important role played by Tunisia in the conclusion of the recent political agreements in Libya, especially by hosting the first Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in November 2020, reads a press release of the Presidency of the Republic.

On his part, the President of the Republic highlighted Tunisia’s willingness to make every effort to contribute to the success of this stage, given “the privileged connections between the Tunisian and Libyan people.” “The success of the UN mission in Libya represents a success for Libya, Tunisia and the whole region,” he pointed out, adding that “Libya is about to start a new phase in its history.” Libya is beginning a process of transition from provisional international legitimacy to lasting internal legitimacy, he underlined.

Kubiš said he was honored to have this meeting with the President of the Republic, which outlines the first high-level meeting since he took office. At the conclusion of the meeting, Kubiš extended thanks to Tunisia, a non-permanent member of the UN Security-Council, for its support to the UN action in Libya, displaying hope to see this co-operation further strengthened.
