Tunisia-President Kais Saied demands urgent labor law reform

President of the Tunisian Republic, Kais Saied, welcomed Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani at Carthage Palace. This meeting was an opportunity for the President to reaffirm the significance of urgent reform of labour law in Tunisia.

Bill for the abolition of subcontracting

During this meeting, President Saied insisted on the necessity to speed up the preparation of a bill aimed at abolishing subcontracting and fixed-term contracts. He emphasised that this bill should include clear, objective and fair criteria to protect the rights of employees who have been employed for years under the subcontracting regime and who are now substituted by new workers, consequently leaving former employees at the mercy of their employer’s wishes regarding direct recruitment after a certain period.

Workers’ Rights: A Priority

The President of the Republic stated that those who have spent decades working in a system close to slavery should not have their efforts manipulated or ignored. He cautioned against the practices of certain employers who replace workers to keep them in a precarious situation, a strategy aimed at evading the application of the law and contrary to the fundamental principles of justice and equity.

Towards fairness in the world of work

According to President Saied, the rights of workers must be balanced with those of workers, and social justice requires that both parties be treated fairly. This legislative reform aims to set a fair balance between the interests of employers and the rights of workers, therefore ensuring that each party is respected and that working conditions are improved for all.

This initiative marks an important step in Tunisia’s efforts to modernize its labour legal framework and improve the living conditions of workers while promoting social justice and equity.
