President of the Republic Kais Saied decided to grant a special pardon to 1856 detainees, on the 64th anniversary of Independence.
Under this measure, 670 detainees will be released and the rest will benefit from a reduced sentence.
The President met, on Thursday at the Carthage Palace, with Minister of Justice Thouraya Jeribi who presented him with a report on the outcome of work of the special pardon committee, in the presence of the committee members.
The Head of state instructed to disinfect prisons and support the efforts of private health units in prevention against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
He also called on the special pardon committee to examine an additional list of detainees’ files to study the possibility of granting them pardon to combat prison overcrowding and preserve the health of Tunisians.
