Tunisia-President Kais Saied meet French interior minister, calls for a new approach to tackling terrorism

The president of the Republic Kais Saied received France interior minister  Gerald Darmanin at Carthage presidential palace.

The meeting addressed the security situation in the region in general, and particularly the terrorist operations that befell recently in France, and approaches to enhance the existing cooperation between Tunisia and France in all fields.

According to the presidency of the republic, the need was stressed to address the phenomenon of terrorism according to a new approach based on discussing the actual causes that led to its aggravation, and the goals that some attempt by targeting innocent victims.

The head of state affirmed that Tunisia is not safe to these operations, as it has observed in recent years several terrorist operations targeting Tunisians and non-Tunisians.

The President of the Republic also recollected the arrangement concluded between Tunisia and France in 2008 associated to the deportation of those in illegal situations, a discussion will take place in this regard with the Tunisian security authorities to obtain resolutions to existing barriers that may arise in the future, as well as more collaboration and coordination between the two nations to put an end to the phenomenon of irregular migration and encircle Terror networks.

On his part, the French interior minister communicated to the President of the Republic the greetings of President Emmanuel Macron and his gratitude for Tunisia’s solidarity with France in the wake of the recent terrorist operations. He additionally commended the security cooperation between the two countries, remarkably in the field of combating terrorism. He invited for strengthening this cooperation at the bilateral and multilateral levels, emphasising that his country does not confront religions but extremist ideologies.
