Tunisia-President Kais Saied visits Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba

President of the Republic Kais Saied rejected «attempts made by some parties to put in place tailor-made laws” so as to “settle scores,» reiterating his abidance by the Constitution that grants him the right to object “even for political reasons”.

Speaking at a ceremony held in Monastir on the 21st Anniversary of the passing of leader Habib Bourguiba, Saied warned against using legislation “to protect the interests of a single person or a specific party.»

“Today, Tunisia needs real justice as well as a Constitutional Court. We refuse to have a court of settling scores,» he underscored.

The President of the Republic criticised the delay made in the installation of the Constitutional Court although the Parliament had been called to create it no later than one year after the legislative elections (Article 148 of the Constitution).

“Today, after more than five years of lethargy, discord and hypocrisy, they are feeling some danger and remembered the significance of the Constitutional Court and the supremacy of the law,” he added, stressing that they “set themselves up” and this will not “push him to violate the Constitution”.

Kais Saied pointed out that he had his eyes toward the future,» “unlike those who keep going back to history and focusing on past errors and backwardness which will by no means be accepted by the Tunisian society.”

“We have enough legal material and tools. Each party will have to bear full responsibility for blocking the machinery of the State and the blows dealt to it from within and those targeting the Tunisian society.”

The Head of State denounced “a plot» to undermine the public service established since the 1960’s, including education, health, and transport as well one» that targets our Islamic values.»

«The Tunisian people is overwhelmed by poverty and all forms of exclusion. It is their right to participate in the establishment of a new political system, one that meets their aspirations,” he further stressed.

The President of the Republic noted that “some forces still control the State apparatus,» adding the country has shifted from one party to one single lobby.

“This is a real danger. We seem to have political pluralism but actually, we have one lobby only,” the President warned, emphasizing that he will not be ready to deal with lobbies and those who got their hands on the wealth of the people.
