Tunisia-President Saied receives a letter from Biden

The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, welcomed on Friday, August 13, 2021, an official American delegation chaired by the Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States of America Jonathan Finer at Carthage presidential palace.

During this meeting, the head of the state evoked that the exceptional measures decided on last July 25  fall within the framework of the application of the Constitution and meet the expectations of the people due to the political, economic and social crisis, as well as endemic corruption.

The President of the Republic further warned against the attempts of some to distort reality and relay rumours and illusions concerning the situation in Tunisia. He, therefore, indicated that there is no necessity to worry about freedom, justice and democracy.

Mr Saïed has also pointed out that he will not accept that Tunisian people are subjected to injustices and violations of their rights. He emphasised the preservation of modernity and openness to the Other in Tunisia. “Tunisia will remain attached to its strategic partnerships with its historic friends,” he said.

For his part, Jonathan Finer conveyed a handwritten letter from US President Joseph Biden to his Tunisian counterpart. Jonathan Viner said that the American president is following the progression of the situation in Tunisia and that he has the biggest respect for this country and for its president. He additionally revealed that the US administration is aware of the scale of the challenges Tunisia faces, particularly the economic and health issue.

Finally, Jonathan Finer affirmed that the United States of America will stay committed to the strategic friendship that ties them with Tunisia. They support the democratic process and keenly await the following steps that the President of the Republic will take at the governmental and political levels.
