House SpeakerRached Ghannouchi declared the approval of the motion of no confidence against him and was submitted by 73 deputies. The motion is foreseen to be put to a vote on July 30.
At the conclusion of the meeting of the parliament bureau which took place in the attendance of all its members, Ghannouchi informed the press that “the motion was approved upon by the members of the bureau without a vote to pass it to the plenary session next Thursday”.
“It was feasible to defer the motion as to form, but I accepted the challenge as a mark of respect for the will of 73 members.” Because their number is not negligible,” Ghannouchi stated, adding that “the decision was the topic of consent between 13 MPs far from the logic of predominance”.
Ghannouchi stated that he himself had put forward the suggestion to pass the motion through the plenary session and that he was not bothered by this issue, which he said would be an occasion to reassess confidence in his presidency of the parliament.
Next Thursday’s plenary session will be an opportunity to build confidence in him, not take it away, he assured.
“I did not land on a tank but I was chosen by my party and I was elected to parliament by Tunisian voters and to the Speaker of Parliament by MPs,” he said.
