Tunisia-Raoudha Abidi: Infant trafficking increased by 60%

The president of the National Authority against Trafficking in Persons (INLTP) Raoudha Abidi announced that 907 human trafficking operations were reported this year, against 1313 in 2019. This reduction is due to the closing of borders which took place this year due to the spread of the coronavirus.
On the other hand, with regard to the trafficking of infants (and children in general), Abidi pointed out that on average the INLTP registers one such transaction every week. Child trafficking has grown by more than 60% according to Raoudha Abidi. It is wrong to believe that only single mothers carry out this kind of manoeuvre, the seller could be a human trafficker or even one or more members of the child’s family, she stated.
There is a complete network to identify people in a fragile situation who need these sorts of “services”. There are likewise people who conceive children for “sale,” she added. The sexual exploitation of children further increased by more than 180% in 2020, according to the president of the INLTP. These alarming reports of the authorities have so far remained unfulfilled, said Raoudha Abidi, that it does not make sense to create an authority while depriving  it of the means to do correctly what it was created for.
