Tunisia-Reforms and rescue measures at heart of discussions between President Saied and PM Hachani

A roadmap for development and the fight against corruption

In a crucial exchange at Carthage Palace this Friday, March 29, 2024, President Kais Saied and Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani discussed the priorities of the agenda of the next council of ministers.

Among the fundamental subjects, is the accelerated installation of the “South and Sahara Development Office”, an initiative revealed by the president during his recent visit to the Douz region.

Public transport crisis: a sector in decline

Another critical issue on the agenda was the deep transportation crisis within and between cities, characterised by endemic corruption that has been rampant for decades.

The sector shows alarming figures: out of 1,157 buses in circulation in Greater Tunis, just 434 are still operational.

As for the metro, only 40 of the 189 cars still serve the public, and the northern suburbs train is running at 27.8% of its capacity. The situation in the rest of the country is not much better.

Towards a rehabilitation of public services

President Kais Saied highlighted the urgency of repairing what can be repaired as quickly as possible and holding responsible those who led to this catastrophic situation. He criticized the policy of neglect of public services adopted for decades, calling for an immediate end to this approach and the accountability of those who destroyed the public transport service, among others.

Rescue of emblematic national institutions

In the same context, the president insisted on the necessity to quickly preserve many public institutions and facilities, underscoring the recently developed program for the rescue of the Société Tunisienne du Sucre, established in 1961. This company, which aimed at a production capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year a decade after its creation, saw its equipment decline and part of its infrastructure drop into disuse following ill-advised policies and the influence of lobbies and corruption networks.

The president called for the rapid development of rescue programs for other institutions such as the Fouledh Company and the National Paper Company (Halfa), stressing the importance of these institutions for Tunisia and the need to preserve them against corruption and degradation.
