Religious Affairs Minister Ibrahim Chaïbi annulled the cooperation agreements with the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID) and the Tunisian section of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, regarding the training and coaching of religious leaders as well as the organisation of joint conferences.
According to an official source at the Ministry of Religious Affairs contacted by TAP, the cancellation of the agreements is prompted by the non-conformity of the proposed programmes with the needs of religious officials and the capacity of state institutions and other independent institutions to provide the required training.
“The Ministry of Religious Affairs should be held above suspicion, especially since the heads of these centres have clear political allegiances and hold leadership positions in parties,” he pointed out, adding that “this runs counter to the department’s objectives of neutrality, which Minister Ibrahim Chaïbi insists on.”
