Tunisia-Safi: “We do not have any issue with digitization, but we reject ministry’s approach of individual dealing” [Video]

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, the General Secretary of the University of Secondary Education Mohammad Safi,  expressed concerns today, Friday, February 23, 2024, concerning the Ministry of Education’s approach to executing a digital platform project unilaterally. In a statement, the Union criticized the Ministry for its decision-making process, which they described as insular and detached from collaborative practices.

Safi elaborated on the Union’s stance, underlining their rejection of partaking in uploading educational materials to the platform. This refusal arises from what they perceive as the Ministry’s disregard for established norms of participatory work. Safi pointed out an issue of role confusion, remarking that the responsibility of providing educational content has traditionally been with the teaching staff.

Furthermore, he explained that the Union is not opposed to digital advancements in the education sector. They advocate for the modernization of educational establishments. Nevertheless, the project proposed by the Ministry of Education, while seemingly aimed at improving educational facilities, is criticized for not addressing the underlying challenges encountered by public schools. Safi underscored the significance of involving the Union and other stakeholders in any decisions or measures related to the education system, stressing the necessity for a more inclusive and consultative approach.
