Tunisia-Samir Abdelmoumen:Tunisia may see rebound in COVID-19 cases

Tunisia may see “rebound in the number of cases of infection with COVID-19,” member of the National Committee for the Fight against Coronavirus Samir Abdelmoumen said to the TAP agency.

Speaking on the sidelines of a periodic press briefing by the Ministry of Health, Abdelmoumen said “it was possible to register a new rebound in the number of cases of infection with the virus”, ruling out the possibility of a second wave of infection during this period.

In a statement to  the TAP, He said these cases are observed through isolated and limited cases of infections compared to the first period of the spread of the virus, noting that this phenomenon could present some similarities with the swine flu epidemic in 2009 which was treated with a high level of efficiency and caution

He explained that the high number of cases of infection in the Greater Tunis region and the island of Djerba is mainly due to the presence of airports in both regions, considering that air travel contributes significantly to the spread of the disease. “The same applies to countries with heavy air traffic,” he noted.

In addition, he revealed that rapid tests will help detect the disease in certain individuals who have a weak immune system, including diabetic patients and those suffering from obesity. “These tests will also make it possible to detect the disease in structures employing a large number of workers, such as the armed forces and health executives and staff and to carry out surveys in areas with high concentrations of dwellings to detect the virus in certain neighbourhoods or target areas,” Abdelmoumen said.
