Tunisia: Scandalous: He is jailed for 6 months in prison for a can of tuna

In a post published on her personal profile on November 10, 2020, lawyer Nadia Chaouchi announced that the court of first instance in Tunis had condemned a young person to 6 months in jail for having stolen two cans of tuna from the supermarket.

Having eaten what he had “stolen” at the scene, the young man defended his actions by the fact that he “was hungry because he had not eaten for several days”. A reason that seemingly did not persuade the court.

Nadia Chaouachi concluded that “the right to life should prevail over the right to property, evoking that in comparative legal systems, this justification dispenses with the sanction.
