Colonel Chokri Jabri, spokesperson for the General Directorate of Customs, stated Customs Guard units seized 16 tons of contraband bananas during the first week of the month of Ramadan, during roadside checks and raids in businesses selling this product.
Speaking to Mosaique FM, Jabri explained that the number of smuggled bananas seized in January and February 2024 amounted to 62 tonnes, bringing the total seizures to 78 tonnes, which will then be reintroduced into the commercial distribution channels.
Smuggled bananas are sold in grocery stores and fruit and vegetable markets in Tunis at a price varying between 10 and 15 dinars per kilogram.
